History of the Cane Corso
Pronounced KAH-nee CORE-so, an ancient guardian breed from Italy.
History and origin
The Cane Corso is an ancient breed that originated in Italy. In medieval times it was used as a big game hunter. Its power, courage and agility made it especially valuable on the battlefield, and these dogs served as "warriors" in Alexander's Macedonian army. They were also used for hunting, herding and as family guardians.
Temperament and personality
The Cane Corso is known as an extremely bold, highly intelligent and easily trained dog. They are very territorial and suspicious of strangers. They can sense people's intentions and will protect their owner and property at any cost.
Cane Corsos are very loyal. They need plenty of exercise, attention and interaction with their family. Throughout its long history the Cane Corso has been used as a guardian for children, and it makes an excellent pet for the entire family.
Size and appearance
The Cane Corso is an athletic, medium-to-large dog with a strong yet elegant build and long, powerful muscles. The muzzle is notably deep and broad. The neck is strong, slightly arched and very muscular, and the compact body is strong and well muscled.
The short coat is dense and shiny and grows thicker in winter. Brindling is common, as is a black or gray mask on fawn and formentino dogs. White patches can appear on the chest, the tips of the feet and the bridge of the nose.
